As the year draws to a close, it’s time to evaluate the best-ofs and prepare for award season.

2015 saw some of the biggest blockbusters in decades, which broke many a box office record. These are our picks for top five films of 2015 taking into account box office revenue, critical acclaim, and general popularity.

Mad Max: Fury Road

While technically not the biggest film of the year, Mad Max tops most best of lists and was highly acclaimed. According to Rotten Tomatoes, it was the number one reviewed film of 2015 and is certified fresh at 97%.

It is unrivaled in its production design, costumes, and cinematography, with impressive performances by both stars, Charlize Theron and Tom Hardy.

Star Wars: The Force Awakens

Although it only came out a week ago, highly anticipated Star Wars: The Force Awakens has already broken multiple box office records including top opening day and weekend gross.

The first Star Wars film in over ten years, nearly 300 critics have already reviewed it in its first weekend and it has garnered a 95% fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes; none of the previous Star Wars trilogy films even come close.

Inside Out

Disney Pixar films are always a hit at the box office, but this year’s film Inside Out, became their most popular and highest grossing film thus far. It grossed $90 million its first weekend and stayed in theaters for nearly six months straight.

Inside Out provides access to valuable dialogue about emotions between parents and children in addition to its visually stunning animation.

The Martian

Based on a novel by Andy Weir, The Martian chronicles one astronaut’s incredible survival story when he is left for dead on Mars.

Matt Damon’s performance as astronaut Mark Watney earned him a Golden Globe nomination, making an Oscar nod a real possibility.

The film is on IMDB’s top 200 list currently with an 8.2 out of 10 rating from nearly 200,000 user ratings.

Room

While it’s not a big blockbuster and hasn’t made tons of money at the box office, Room is buzzworthy for its unique plot and beautiful mother-son relationship.

With an incredible performance by Brie Larson, a Best Actress nomination is inevitable. However, due to an equally amazing performance from child actor, Jacob Tremblay, his success may overshadow her own.

With the Oscar nominations less than a month away, only time will tell if The Academy agrees with our picks for best films of the year.
