Golden Globe winner The Revenant has dominated the box office this weekend despite the battle with winter storm Jonas.

Internationally, the box office figure stands at $33.8 million, with the top spot of the US box office being taken at $16 million, and the UK reaching $6 million.

Although Star Wars: The Force Awakens is the #1 movie of all time in the US, it has currently lost out at the box office to The Revenant, with The Revenant standing at more than $10 million dollars above it internationally for the weekend.

The Revenant tells the partly true story of the survival of Hugh Glass, a legendary explorer left for dead following a fierce attack by a bear. The gritty epic is leading the way with Oscar nominations, having been put forward for a massive twelve categories including Best Motion Picture of the Year and Best Achievement in Cinematography.

Leonardo DiCaprio, who plays Hugh Glass in the movie has not won an Oscar to date, despite winning an impressive forty awards in total in his career so far; but he does stands a chance of winning in the Best Performance in a Leading Role category.

There is no doubt that Leonardo DiCaprio showed an incredible amount of endurance when filming The Revenant. The movie was shot in Canada and Argentina, and as well as enduring the temperature, which at one point hit 40 below zero; he had to eat raw bison liver to add realism to a scene. This was particularly challenging for him as he is a vegetarian.

He also caught the flu, which ironically also enhanced a scene!

Tom Hardy, who starred with Leonardo DiCaprio in Inception, has also been nominated for an Oscar for Best Supporting Actor for his role as John Firzgerald, a villian who justifies abandoning Hugh Glass.

The Revenant is currently showing in theaters nationwide.
