Star Wars: The Force Awakens hasn’t officially been released in theaters yet but it’s already breaking all kinds of records. All thanks to the presales. The Force Awakens is not only selling more presale tickets than average, but its presale totals are higher than a lot of films make from their entire theater run.
The film has already made $100 million off its presale tickets, and 50-60 percent of that will be for the opening weekend. There are some estimates that the presales might reach $120 million, and that the opening weekend at the box could pull in $180 to $220 million.
The prior presale ticket record holder was Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight Rises which made $25 million in presales – a number that was high at the time.
There are so many clamoring for tickets in fact, that when they became available the many online users at once actually crashed the Fandango site.
In addition to ticket sales the film also had a massive premier on Monday night-in fact it was one of the largest premiers ever. An entire half mile of Hollywood boulevard was shut down to house the red carpet and a giant tunnel for the event, and 4,000 people were invited to watch the movie screen for the first time in one of three movie theaters in the area.
Most of Hollywood turned up for the event, many of which paid homage to their favorite Star Wars characters by dressing up in costume.
Star Wars: The Force Awakens officially opens Friday December 18, 2015.
