Following much speculation it has been announced that Brit Tom Holland is to play the lead role of Peter Parker/Spider-Man in the upcoming reboot.
Following in the footsteps of Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield, Tom will be the youngest Spidey to date, at just 19 years old.
Marvel Studios and Sony Pictures undertook a thorough search for the new Spider-Man and were very impressed by Tom’s performances in The Impossible, Wolf Hall and the upcoming In the Heart of the Sea. Tom, fresh from his success in the title role in London’s Billy Elliot the Musical, had to participate in a series of complex screen tests.
“With Tom we’ve found the perfect actor to bring Spider-Man’s story into the Marvel Cinematic Universe,” said producer Amy Pascal.
Jon Watt has also been announced as the movie’s director. Jon was described by the group chairman of Sony Pictures Motion Pictures, Tom Rothman, as,“an outstanding talent.”
Prior to the release of the new Spider-Man movie, Spidey fans can get a taste of Tom in the same role of Peter Parker/Spider-Man, as he is also appearing in superhero movie Captain America: Civil War, which includes stars Robert Downey Jr and Paul Bettany. This movie is due for release in May 2016.
The plot of the new Spidey movie (title to be announced) won’t be concentrating so much on how Peter Parker becomes Spider-Man, but will be more based around the fact that he is a teenager in high school, and how he can use his wit and banter against the villians just has much as his powers.
Spider-Man is the most successful franchise in Sony’s history, with the first five movies having global takings of more than $4 billion. The new Spider-Man movie is scheduled for release summer ’17.
