Londoner Eddie, 33, won four awards for his performance as Stephen Hawking, including the Academy Award for Best Actor. In the upcoming Harry Potter movie he will play the part of Newt Scamander, a famed ‘magizoologist’ who developed an interest in magical creatures from an early age.
The film will follow the character as he fuels his passion for magical creatures by scouring the globe to document sightings of them, compiling the information for his history book Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them.
Author of the Harry Potter books, J. K. Rowling, is making her debut as a screenwriter for the movie and has described it as “an extension of the wizardry world,” emphasising that it isn’t actually a prequel or a sequel.
The movie, which is the first in a trilogy, will be directed by the same man who directed the last four of the original Harry Potter films, David Yates.
David shares the enthusiasm of Harry Potter fans about the news that Eddie is joining the cast, describing his as “a fearless actor, brimming with invention, wit and humanity.”
Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them is set seven decades before the original Harry Potter movie, Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone, and is being shot at the Warner Bros Studios, Leavesden in the UK.
The movie is poised for release November 2016.
