Movie theaters around the country cash in on Thanksgiving every year as families head to the movies after they’ve eaten their weight in turkey and pie.
This year’s Thanksgiving weekend openings include Creed, a sequel from the Rocky franchise, and Disney Pixar’s The Good Dinosaur. While Creed has pulled in more favorable reviews, Wednesday’s numbers have it at $6 million compared to The Good Dinosaur’s $9.8 million.
However, The Good Dinosaur also has blockbuster The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 2 to contend with. Entering its second weekend after leading the box office with a $102 million opening, Mockingjay Part 2 has a strong chance of keeping its number one spot with $13.7 million gained on Wednesday.
In the last few years, it has been a toss up between animated family films and young adult fantasy franchises during Thanksgiving weekend. The Hunger Games series has topped the box office during the holiday weekend for the past two years.
While Mockingjay Part 2 is the final sequel in an already established franchise, it faces tough competition with The Good Dinosaur.
Disney films, and especially Pixar films, typically steal the number one spot on their opening weekend, even against live action franchises and big budget blockbusters. In 2013, Monsters University beat out the highly anticipated Brad Pitt zombie movie, World War Z.
There is also the lure of an Oscar-contending animated short attached to The Good Dinosaur. Sanjay’s Super Team made the short list for a possible Best Animated Short nomination.
As of Wednesday, Mockingjay Part 2 was raking in about 30% less in sales than it’s opening day after only a week in. The Good Dinosaur still needs to double or even triple its opening day sales in order to take the lead.
Box Office Mojo predicts Mockingjay Part 2 as the leader with an estimated $60 million for the weekend. However, three more days of sales remain before the numbers can be tallied and a winner can emerge.
The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 2 opened November 20, 2015 in 4,175 theaters. The Good Dinosaur opened November 25, 2015 in 3,749 theaters.
