Actress/comedian Whoopi Goldberg has launched her own line of medical cannabis products. Whoopi & Maya will be a joint venture with weed entrepreneur Maya Elisabeth, who is the founder of Om Edibles, another medical cannabis line.
The product will feature a series of topicals, soaks, edibles, and tinctures aimed to aid in the treatment of menstrual cramps for women. Goldberg was inspired to start the line because two of her granddaughters suffer from severe cramps as did Goldberg when she was younger. She also treats her glaucoma-related headaches with medical cannabis and has advocated for its use publicly many times.
“This is a nice quiet way that I can be part of this,” Goldberg told USA Today. “It had to help people if I were going to be involved.”
In 2014, Goldberg wrote a column on Colorado based marijuana news site, The Cannabist where she talked about the love affair she has with her vaporizer pen along with expanding the uses of medical marijuana in New York. She has also discussed her use of medical marijuana on The View, arguing for its benefits and even offering to take co-host Sunny Hostin to a growing farm to educate her further.
The Whoopi & Maya brand will only be available in California where medical marijuana use is legal with doctor’s approval and a special ID card. California’s medical marijuana industry produces $2.7 billion in sales, which is half of the national market. The product will be sold in select licensed dispensaries and will be available starting next month.
