The 2016 Met Gala is still about six months away, but the hosts have been chosen for the event, one of which will be none other than Taylor Swift. The Metropolitan Museum of Art Has Also Released the theme of the event, which will be “Manux X Machina: Fashion in an Age of Technology.”
Costume Institute curator Andrew Bolton spoke to Vogue about the theme.
“Traditionally, the distinction between the haute couture and prêt-à-porter was based on the handmade and the machine-made. But recently this distinction has become increasingly blurred as both disciplines have embraced the practices and techniques of the other.”
The show will feature 100 different clothing items which will be a mixture of high fashion and ready wear items. The juxtaposition between the machine and handmade will be highlighted by showcasing new techniques like laser cutting, as well as classic ones like embroidery.
In addition to Taylor, the other co-chairs hosting the night will be Idris Elba, Anna Wintour, and Jonathan Ive. This will be Taylor’s first time hosting at the event, although she has attend the event five times including this past year with her friend and fellow singer Selena Gomez.
Selena fondly recalls the night, saying:
“My first Met Gala. I felt like a princess who totally downed an entire pizza after. I’ll never forget last night.”
The gala will be held Monday May 2, 2016, with an accompanying workshop sponsored by Apple where guests will be able to see some of the designs in the process of being made.
