Alien franchise star Sigourney Weaver has expressed her excitement about the upcoming fifth installment, while at the same time slamming the Alien vs. Predator franchise.
Sigourney and director Neill Blomkamp have all but confirmed she will be reprising her role as Ellen Ripley in the new movie, which will pick up after Aliens.
The star has long been open to participating in another Alien film —provided she was happy with the story and director — because she felt Ripley’s story was “incomplete.”
She and Neill worked together on Chappie, and she seems to have 100% confidence in him as director of the as yet untitled Alien 5.
“I’m so excited about Neill,” she told fans at the London Film and Comic-Con on the weekend.
“Neill is like you guys! He broke the tapes of those movies when he was a kid, he watched them so much.”
“I love the fact that Neill’s fulfilling his childhood dream of what he hopes will be the popcorn movie, the Alien popcorn movie that he wanted as a kid to see.”
Neill recently excited Ripley fans by posting a teaser on Instagram – an art poster showing how Ripley would look now with Corporal Dwayne Hicks (Michael Biehn). He added that the project was going very well.
The plot of Alien 5 will follow on from the original two movies — the ones Sigourney is most proud to be associated with.
“I want this film to feel like it is literally the genetic sibling of Aliens. So it’s Alien, Aliens and then this movie,” Neill said in a recent interview with Sky Movies.
No release date has been announced yet, but the film is expected to hit theaters sometime in 2017.
