Disney star Rowan Blanchard has recently shared that she identifies as queer, and in an interview with Wonderland magazine she talks about what it was like to come out on Twitter.
The 14-year-old star of Girl Meets World expressed that she was met with a lot of questions when she started talking about her sexuality.
At the time she tweeted:
“In my life – only ever liked boys. However I personally don’t wanna label myself as straight, gay or whateva so I am not gonna give myself labels to stick with – just existing.”
And then later added that she was “open to liking any gender in the future,” and that she prefers to identify as “queer.”
Rowan admitted that it was scary to see the sort of responses that people had for her, especially since it was about something that really had nothing to do with them.
In the midst of getting both good and bad responses through social media, Rowan is committed to using it to the best of her advantage.
“But I’m trying, I guess, to restructure Instagram and Twitter to a place where, yes – you can be subject to other people’s opinions – but you can also think, ‘I’m gonna use this word or image again, like a protest,’ because if you’re just continuing to do what you’re doing then people will start to realize that you’re not doing it for them.”
Rowan has also been sharing photos tagging @wonderlandmag which go along with the interview.
“The downside to social media is it’s another place for girls to be made fun of and another way for girls to be degraded,” she told Wonderland. “the upside is that it’s also a way for girls — especially girls of color, for example — to speak out and to take back some control.”
