Top Chef host Padma Lakshmi had been told many times that she would never be able to conceive because of the severe endometriosis she experiences, so when she suddenly got pregnant in 2009 she was surprised…in more ways than one.
In an excerpt from her new memoir Love, Loss and What We Ate, Padma admits that she was dating two men when she found out that she was pregnant. The pregnancy news first hit her with shock and elation, but then “a question began to nag at my giddiness: not so much ‘How?’ but the far more uncomfortable ‘Who?'”
At the time Padma was dating both billionaire Teddy Forstmann who is the IMG CEO, and Adam Dell, who is the brother of Michael Dell who founded Dell Computers. She didn’t find out who the father was until the official paternity test went through.
There were a lot of challenges involved in that news, including the fact that she had split with Adam and Teddy was not happy to hear that the child was not his. He went so far as to offer to raise the child as his own, but she declined. In the book she goes on to discuss both the challenge of hurting someone she cares about, as well as doing it in the public eye.
Despite the hardship of the situation, she got a child out of it, and wasn’t going to shy away from telling her honest story.
“There were a lot of difficult things I went through in a very short intense period of time under very public circumstances and I needed to be forthright and honest about it. I needed to write the kind of book that I would read, frankly. I wouldn’t want to read a book that was just one long fluff piece.”
