Any Gilmore Girls fan has heard word that a Netflix reboot was in the works, but it doesn’t sound like all the original characters are coming back this time.

While Alexis Bledel and Lauren Graham are set to return as the famed mother and daughter duo of Stars Hollow, Melissa McCarthy who had a key role in the show was apparently not asked to join.

In the original TV series Melissa played Sookie St. James, the chef at the restaurant of the hotel that Lorelai Gilmore owned. On Monday, which happened to be the same day that production started for the reboot, Melissa tweeted:

“Thanks for the invite, but sadly no one asked me or Sookie to come back to Stars Hollow. Wish them all the best!!”

Melissa was in all but one of the original episodes, which ended up being 153 episodes out of the seven seasons. Other original returning cast members include Scott Patterson (as Luke), Kelly Bishop (as Emily), Sean Gunn (as Kirk) and Keiko Agena (as Lane).

The show’s creator Amy Sherman-Palladino however said that there is a good explanation for Sookie’s absence, but that we’ll just have to wait to find out exactly what that is.

Some suspect that the move has to do with Melissa’s huge success following the show…namely that a Netflix reboot of such a beloved show is generally going to have a lower budget that might not make room for people who have become big stars.

As of right now the Netflix reboot is planned to be four ninety minute episodes.
