Matt Damon has garnered a lot of attention over the past week for making somewhat controversial comments.

He has been doing publicity interviews in the wake of the release of his new film The Martian.

It started with the remarks made during an episode of Project Greenlight where he commented on the importance of diversity in movies.

More recently, he stirred controversy by stating that the public shouldn’t know the sexuality of a film actor.

Matt explained the remarks by saying that he merely meant that the less an audience knows about an actor, the better their performances will work on-screen.

He told The Hollywood Reporter, “There was some taken out of context.” Viewing the episode later, he couldn’t believe how he sounded, commenting, “I look like an asshole.”

“I thought it was a really insensitive thing to say,” he said.

Matt later discussed what was meant by his comment stating, “I was just trying to say actors are more effective when they’re a bit of a mystery.”

He further explained to The Hollywood Reporter that, “somebody picked it up and said I’d said gay actors should get back in the closet.”

“It’s stupid, but, it’s painful when things get said that you don’t believe, and then it gets represented that that’s what you believe, because nobody in the blogosphere, there’s no real penalty for taking the ball and running with it.”

The Martian comes out October 2 in theaters across America.
