Amid this breakup-filled summer, Julianne Hough has some happier news – wedding bells are in the air for the 27-year-old who just got engaged to 32-year-old professional hockey player Brooks Laich.
The Dancing With the Stars judge and two-time DWTS champion announced the exciting news to her 1.8 million Instagram followers on Tuesday.
The pair met at a reception hosted by the dancer’s ‘Curve’ co-star, Teddy Sears, and began dating in December of 2013. She said “yes” to Brooks’ proposal while on vacation in Couer d’Alene, Idaho, where her grandparents live.
It seems the pair have been enjoying quite the fun getaway as just a couple of days earlier the actress shared another pic and wrote, “Niece and Nephew time on the lake! Couldn’t be happier!!”
This will be the first marriage for both, though Julianne was previously engaged to dancer and childhood friend Zach Wilson in 2006 and 2007. After their breakup she dated country singer Chuck Wicks for a little over a year, and then famously began a relationship with Ryan Seacrest for nearly three years, splitting with the American Idol host in March of 2013.
The engagement doesn’t come as a huge surprise – last year the Utah native told Redbook how she knew Brooks was “The One.” She explained, “Every relationship, there was nothing wrong or bad, but there was nothing right. I had one foot out because I didn’t want to get hurt. And I didn’t say what was on my mind because I didn’t want to ruffle any feathers. I needed to be perfect. Now I’m not holding anything back because I’d rather get my heart broken than never know what it is to be completely, madly in love. If I had been this open in my last relationship [with Ryan Seacrest], who knows?”
“We’ve been open and honest from day one,” she added.
Brooks, who was born and raised in Canada, revealed the story about how they met to 106.7 The Fan last year after being asked if he was familiar with Julianne’s work. He admitted, “To be honest, I had never seen an episode of Dancing With the Stars, but in my defense, she had never seen a Caps game either until she met Teddy.”
Though he was hesitant about sharing too much, he did add, “She’s a cool, cool gal. She’s just a sweetheart, very loving, very giving. She puts so much great out into the world. I’m a pretty lucky guy.”
