Amid all the news of breakups this summer, it seems at least one relationship is enduring. Ellen DeGeneres and wife Portia de Rossi celebrated seven years of marriage, and chose to spend at least part of their special day by reveling in love at the Teen Choice Awards in Los Angeles.

The 57-year-old, who was up for Choice Comedian along with George Lopez, Kevin Hart, Jimmy Fallon, Jimmy Kimmel and Amy Schumer, took the prize and, in typical Ellen fashion, delivered an especially emotional speech – infused with a little humor, of course.

After giving her love a quick kiss, Ellen climbed up on stage to receive the ceremonial surfboard from Modern Family favorite Sarah Hyland.

She began her speech in a humorous note. “Wow, thank you so much. I’m honored to be in that category. There were some hilarious people, and so thank you very much. And what a coincidence! And it’s convenient! I was on my way to the beach. I had forgotten my surfboard so this will come in handy,” she joked. “I’ll put it on top of my car.”

Then things got a little more emotional.

The talk show host told the crowd, “I want to say I’m pro-teen choice. I also want to say that it is good to be chosen.”

Sending a special message to teens who might be suffering through a difficult time, she continued, “It feels good to be chosen, but there was a time in my life where I was not chosen. I was the opposite of chosen because I was different.

“The most important thing I want to say is, just really embrace who you are because being unique is very, very important, and fitting in is not really all that matters. It’s being unique and being who you are.”

As Portia beamed with pride from her seat in the audience, Ellen wrapped up by adding, “What an amazing day this is, this is my seven-year wedding anniversary, so happy anniversary.”

With a big grin, she looked over to her wife and added, “It’s yours, too.”
