Actress Doris Roberts passed away on Sunday at the age of 90. She was best known in recent years for her role as the matriarch, Marie Barone, on Everybody Loves Raymond. The beloved star reportedly passed away in her sleep of natural causes.
Doris began her acting career back in the 1950’s as a stage actress. From 1951 until 2016 she earned herself over 100 credits in movies, TV movies and TV shows, including four movies which have yet to have been released. She won four Emmy’s in her TV time on Everybody Loves Raymond. She also won an Emmy back in 1983 for a guest appearance on St. Elsewhere, and overall was nominated for 11 in her career.
Ray Romano, who played her son on the show for nine seasons, has spoken out about her passing.
“Doris Roberts had an energy and a spirit that amazed me. She never stopped. Whether working professionally or with her many charities, or just nurturing and mentoring a young, green comic trying to make it as an actor, she did it all with such a grand love for life and people and I will miss her dearly.”
Patricia Heaton, who played Ray’s wife and the daughter-in-law to Doris also shared her kind words in remembrance when she posted a photo of the two of them to Twitter.

“Truly the end of an era. My wonderful TV mother-in-law and ELR nemesis Doris Roberts was a consummate professional from whom I learned so much. She was funny and tough and loved life, living it to the fullest. Nothing gave her greater joy than her three wonderful grandchildren, of whom she was so proud. It truly was a privilege Doris. I love you and miss you.”
Doris is survived by her son Michael Cannata Jr., his wife and their three children.
