Charlie Carver, one of the stars of MTV’s Teen Wolf has made an official announcement on Monday sharing the fact that he is gay. The actor took to his social media to spread the word, posting an inspirational and heartfelt essay on his Instagram account.
“As a young boy, I knew I wanted to be an actor. I knew I wanted to be a lot of things… It was around that age that I also knew, however abstractly, that I was different from some of the other boys in my grade,” he wrote. “Over time, this abstract ‘knowing’ grew and articulated itself through a painful gestation marked by feelings of despair and alienation, ending in a climax of saying three words out loud: ‘I am gay.'”
The essay was split into five different parts and posted separately, under a photo with a quote on it that read:
“Be Who You Needed When You Were Younger.”
The 27-year-old has played gay characters before in his career, but he has never spoken publicly about his sexuality either way.
But now he says he feels “excited” by the changes that have taken place in the industry of late and how much more opportunity there is for people to be themselves without being worried about how it will affect their career one way or another. He also mentioned that he feels “excited” to be himself.
“So now, let the record show this – I self-identify as gay… I owe it to myself, more than anything, to be who I needed when I was younger. And let the record show my twin brother is just as cool for being straight.”
Charlie and his twin brother Max have worked together through most of their career, which began when they were cast as twins as children on Desperate Housewives. They then landed twin roles on Teen Wolf, followed by The Leftovers.
