It wasn’t even announced that Beyoncé would be attending the CFDA Awards at all, so it came as a total surprise to many when she was announced as the Fashion Icon of the year and delivered the passionate speech that she did.
The award was announced by Diane Von Furstenberg who is the president of the operation, and she referred to Beyoncé as “today’s biggest superstar.” Beyoncé took to the stage in a striped Givenchy suit and $9 million in Lorraine Schwartz jewelry to accept the honor, while family members Jay Z, Blue Ivy and Tina Knowles looked on from the front row.
This has been a big year for the singer fashion-wise, as she released her own activewear line, Ivy Park.
Beyoncé began her acceptance speech by discussing the important place fashion has in her life, starting with the fact that her grandmother was a seamstress and used those skills to pay for Tina’s tuition at Catholic school growing up. She then passed on her skills to Tina, who used them to make the early Destiny’s Child outfits.
“When we were starting out in Destiny’s Child, high-end labels, they didn’t want to dress four black, country, curvy girls and we couldn’t afford designer dresses and couture. My mother was rejected from every showroom in New York. But like my grandmother, she used her talent and her creativity to give her children their dreams.”
She went on to specifically thank her family members for encouraging her to “take risks, work hard, and live life on [her] own terms,” as well as thank the fashion designers of the world in general for doing what they do.
She closed out her speech touching on the both the responsibility and gift that they have to be influences on the girls of the world.
“We have an opportunity to contribute to a society where any girl can look at a billboard and magazine cover and see her own reflection. Soul has no color, no shape, no form. Just like all of your work it goes far beyond what the eyes can see. You have the power to change perception, to inspire and empower, to embrace their complications and see the true beauty. To show people how to embrace their complications and see the true beauty and strength that’s inside all of us. Thank you so much for this incredible award, I’ll never forget this night, and God bless y’all.”
