Still a bit of a rarity, these women have fought to earn their place among the male-dominated comedy industry. These nine women have worked hard to become some of the Funniest Women in Hollywood:

1. Melissa McCarthy

After years of bit parts, Melissa got a late start on TV when at 30 she starred as Sookie St. James on the television series Gilmore Girls. Movie fame came a short time later when she starred in the 2011 comedy Bridesmaids. She was nominated for several awards for the role and hasn’t slowed down since.

In 2013, she starred in the hilarious movie The Heat alongside Sandra Bullock, and last year played the troubled Tammy in the movie of the same – which she co-wrote and produced. Melissa also continues to star in the CBS comedy Mike and Molly, for which she won a Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series.
